At Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast, Dr Madeleine Rooney is running a major clinical trial which aims to reduce bone-thinning in children with childhood arthritis, caused by prolonged use of steroid treatment.
 |
It is known that prolonged steroid treatment results in bone thinning (osteoporosis). Clear guidelines on how bone thinning should be diagnosed and treated for adults have been developed by researchers around the country while no such information is available for children. We do know, however, that children with rheumatic diseases, especially those treated with steroids, are at high risk of having thin bones. |
Two hundred and fifty children in Northern Ireland and the rest of Britain are taking part in the trial led by Dr Rooney, to test the effectiveness of calcium and vitamin D supplements compared to a bone-building drug called risedronate.
