Dr Gardner-Medwin has established a highly successful and thriving research programme, alongside a regional paediatric rheumatology service for children in Scotland. She has developed a number of projects around the theme of how to identify risk factors for youngsters whose arthritis will be severe and not respond well to treatment, and is also recruiting youngsters for a study to determine whether they are at risk of premature cardiovascular disease.

arc is also funding research in Glasgow to examine how foot problems associated with childhood arthritis can be treated more effectively and efficiently, through a clinical trial of an intensive foot care programme.
