At the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle, Dr Helen Foster is running a research project which aims to find out why children with arthritis often face considerable delays in being referred for appropriate hospital treatment.

One factor is expected to be the lack of awareness among some doctors that children can actually develop arthritis. Other reasons may be the acknowledged need for further training in clinical skills and knowledge about childhood arthritis for health care professionals who deal with them.

This work will improve our understanding of the factors that promote or inhibit referral and help develop ways of improving children’s access to appropriate care and ultimately improve the outcome for children with arthritis.
