Diet and exercise influence a child's bone growth and, in addition, recent studies have shown poor growth before birth can increase the risk of brittle bone disease (osteoporosis) in later life.

Dr Zoë Cole, at Southampton General Hospital, is studying the development of brittle bone disease so we might be able to advise mothers on how to ensure their children have stronger bones throughout life.

As well as the importance of diet and exercise in young children, she is also examining the part played by a mother’s lifestyle on the unborn child and how these two influences interact, subsequently increasing the risk of osteoporosis in later life.

Her work is likely to lead to better advice given to mothers about diet during pregnancy, and once their children are born.
